How do I get a transcript from a YouTube video?

Can I download a YouTube transcript as text?

Yes. You can download a UTF-8 TXT file with or without timestamps or a structured Markdown file.

Can I get a transcript with timestamps?

Yes. Timestamped segments are shown by default, and timestamps can be included in copy, download, and print output.

Can I download the transcript as SRT or VTT?

Yes. SRT and VTT exports use the available caption timing and any local text edits you saved.

Does this tool work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes, public YouTube Shorts links are supported when a transcript is available.

Why is no transcript available for a video?

The video may not have captions, may be private or restricted, or may still be live.

Can this tool transcribe a video without captions?

No. This version retrieves an existing transcript when one is available. It does not download or transcribe the video audio.

Can I edit the transcript?

Yes. Edits stay in the current browser session and are used by copy, exports, and downstream handoffs.

Are transcripts stored?

Transcripts may be held briefly in a server cache to reduce repeated provider requests. They are not saved to a permanent user database.

Can I turn the transcript into notes, quizzes, or flashcards?

Yes. Use the Use Transcript menu to send the edited text to a compatible OneTools study tool. The destination will not run automatically.
